The answer lies in the export format. This ensures that learning content is displayed correctly from a technical standpoint in the <strong>LMS (Learning Management System)<\/strong> and that the desired tracking information is transmitted. The good news: there are proven standards. The challenge: every standard has its own specific characteristics.    <\/p>\n\n<!--more-->\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SCORM 1.2 \u2013 The evergreen among formats<\/h2>\n\n<p>The SCORM standard is the classic among eLearning formats. SCORM stands for <strong>Sharable Content Object Reference Model<\/strong> and defines how learning content is structured, displayed, and tracked within the LMS. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages of SCORM 1.2:<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most widely used worldwide<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compatible with almost all LMS platforms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supports basic tracking: course started, completed, test scores<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Limitation:<\/strong><br\/>Detailed tracking of complex learning paths or intermediate statuses is not possible. Ideal for simple, linear courses with a final test. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Use SCORM 1.2 when maximum compatibility is required and advanced tracking functions are not necessary.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SCORM 2004 \u2013 For more complex requirements<\/h3>\n\n<p>SCORM 2004 is the further development of SCORM 1.2. It additionally enables: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the <strong>tracking of page history and partial progress<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the definition of complex learning paths with dependencies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>But beware:<\/strong><br\/>Not every LMS fully supports SCORM 2004. A compatibility test (e.g., with SCORM Cloud) should definitely be carried out before use. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> SCORM 2004 is useful when intermediate results are relevant or learners navigate non-linearly through the course.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">xAPI (Experience API, formerly Tin Can) \u2013 For learning outside the LMS<\/h3>\n\n<p>xAPI was developed to capture learning activities <strong>outside of an LMS<\/strong> as well \u2013 e.g., in apps, on websites, or during real-world actions (e.g., equipment use, simulation).<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Advantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Very flexible tracking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobile and offline activities can also be recorded<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data is stored in a separate <strong>Learning Record Store (LRS)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong> An LRS is required for use \u2013 in addition to the LMS.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Ideal for modern, networked learning environments with complex learning experiences, mobile elements, or learning analytics.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HTML5 \/ Web Link \u2013 For informal content without tracking<\/h3>\n\n<p>An LMS is not always in use \u2013 or the goal is simply to make a course available for information purposes, e.g., via newsletter or intranet link.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Advantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No LMS required<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easy to publish (as a link or embedded page)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fast availability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Limitations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No tracking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No proof of usage or success<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Use HTML5 export for purely informative learning content without mandatory testing or when the focus is on reach and simplicity.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What else is defined during export?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Regardless of the format, you should consider the following settings in the authoring tool during export:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>When is the course considered completed?<\/strong><br\/>\u2013 e.g., after viewing all pages or passing a test<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>What is being tracked?<\/strong><br\/>\u2013 Test results, progress, time spent<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Is progress saved?<\/strong><br\/>\u2013 so-called &#8220;resume&#8221; function for course interruptions<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>What score is required to pass?<\/strong><br\/>\u2013 including display in the LMS <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: The right format saves time &amp; hassle<\/h2>\n\n<p>The choice of the appropriate export format significantly determines whether your eLearning <strong>functions smoothly from a technical perspective<\/strong>, can be <strong>evaluated correctly<\/strong> \u2013 and is set up to be <strong>future-proof<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Our practical tip:<\/strong><br\/>Test your eLearning courses in advance in a neutral environment like <strong>SCORM Cloud<\/strong> before transferring them to the production LMS.
